When choosing a company to design your web site or company logo it is often necessary to select on the basis of a portfolio of the company's work. StraightOnTheWeb have taken a new approach that will be familiar to anyone who has ever used Shareware i.e. 'Try-Before-You-Buy' software. Simply give them your design requirements and they will put together sample designs without cost or obligation - if you don't like it you don't pay a penny. The article goes on to say that if you like it, you negotiate a price - that does
not follow shareware marketing.

read more: Interacting with Bloggers 101: Permalinks, Product Info, and PersonalityI made some comments today during Steve Rubel's Gnomedex session. Steve asked, what are PR and marketing professionals doing right and wrong? What do people who blog want/need from such departments?
After much arm waving I got Steve to notice me, and I answered with three P's.
- Permalinks: folks, this is such a simple one. Don't make your press release page be "press.php" and old news be "archive.php". Have a single, unique link for each press release, news story, product, or (*gasp*) blog post you make. This means not trying to make me figure out a crazy javascript or Flash navigation system, but simply having a clear, single link I can use to directly get to information. URL schemes like /news/2006/07/01/bigstory or /products/coolproduct/model-vw83 are some good examples.
- Product Info: I like product info. I like permalinks to direct product info. I like tech specs, and I like easily grab-able (and even better, friendly licensed) product photos. Heck, encourage me to hotlink images from your corporate server. Include copy/paste code that includes the permalink and a caption that I can drop into any system that groks HTML. For bonus points, make a little Flash/Javascript/rotating GIF widget that I can put into a post.
- Personality: yes, I want personality. This one is last, because a lot of corporates just can't get past legal, or want the community to bring in the personality. If you're not going to blog, perhaps upgrade your press release writer to someone with a little more human in their blood, or give me a contact that I can talk to/interview to get more of a human face to the information you're presenting.
It seems so simple. But I know how difficult this can be. Many marketing and PR departments rely on a chain of consultants, contractors, or other folks to manage their web presence somewhere down the line. PR types need to become actively vocal about the needs they have. The three P's might be a good place to start.

read more: To Troll or Not to Troll, That Is the Question by John C MahlerThe uninfluential columnists should be defined here. These are people whom you've never heard of, but whom other uninfluential A-list distopianist columnists all know. I reckon there are about 500 of them. He (or she) influences other like-minded columnists, creating a groupthink form of critical mass, just like atomic fission, as they bounce off each other with repetitive cross-links: trackback links, self-congratulatory links, confirmations, and praise-for-their-genius links. BOOM! You get a formidable explosion—an A-bomb of groupthink. You could get radiation sickness if you happen to be in the area. Except for PC Magazine, nobody is in the area, so nobody outside the groupthink community really cares about any of this. These explosions are generally self-contained and harmless to the environment.
Once in a while one of these crackpot ideas may sneak into the public consciousness and become huge because it was a good idea, although I cannot think of one.
The 'folksonomy' notion is the columnists' last hope of invention, although it's a rewrite of the prebubble 'semantic Web' technology at best. And it too is doomed to failure. The utopianism and idealism that exist in the online societies ignore the real problem with Trolls, metaTrolls, überTrolls, folksonomies, and the like. This is because they honestly think that most people are goodhearted. The online world, because of its anonymity, encourages bad behavior. 'You suck!' is a common post, and it would be the number-one Troll if Trolling ever became popular. Then would come the Trolls about 'Online Casino!' One site promoting folksonomies is the darling of the columnists: Flickr.com—an excellent photo-sharing site where being in perpetual beta is a marketing tool. The same people who hate Java and Flash love Flickr, which epitomizes everything good and bad about Java and Flash. Okay, whatever.
Flickr promotes the use of Trolls to add dimensions to photos so you or I could look things up by, uh, the folksonomy. You know, like 'dead dog,' for example. But when you look into it, someone will post 100 pictures and Troll them all 'Yosemite,' and that will be the end of it. I see no depth or real usefulness beyond the old-fashioned 'title!' It's hard to express how jazzed some people are over the potential of all this. I'm certain someone somewhere will write a book on how this new old thing will change the world for the benefit of everyone. It may even catch on for a month. When you look into it later, you'll find it all deteriorated into spam and 'you suck' posts, and then we'll do it again with a new name and a new group of boosters telling us what a great idea Trolling is.
Apparently it's lost on all of them that the term 'Trolling,' in popular parlance, refers to the worst form of public graffiti. These people don't get out much, it seems.
read more: Target Software PlatformsRecently I have been thinking a lot about how software and content developers target different software platforms. Two very compelling recent developments are the adoption of Flash video and AJAX.
Both Flash and DHTML have been around for a long time. It seems that over the past year these two technologies are really taking a big jump.
One is standards based. One is proprietary. One has weak developer tools. One has strong content tools. Both have relative ubiquity.
A key question for me is what factors govern the decision framework for making a bet on these technologies. How do developers and content creators “do the math” to decide that the power and customer value of the experiences they can create are worth the cost of development, page load time, test hit, etc. to make a bet on these?
For the .NET Framework, the story has several dimensions. For server side programming, and websites in particular, there seems to be about an even trade off between PHP or JSP and ASP.NET. This is pretty clear with the rate of new site development on ASP.NET and the options you get today from hosting companies.
Client side targeting is another part of the story. Right now web sites with hosted Windows Form controls are rare and corporate IT team do actively write .NET Framework applications. Consumer penetration is actually quite good with estimates of 55-60% of all desktops today have the .NET Framework 1.1. There are a lot of shareware/freeware apps now starting to take a bet on the .NET Framework. I personally suspect this is because of the great tools and the speed of development.
So, how does your team approach this area? When do you decide to take a technology dependency? What a key factors for you?
